气压弹道碎石中、下段输尿管时，容易使回冲至上段输尿管或内，使手术失去目标，且其仅能在硬性输尿管镜下进行，所以对上段输尿管及几乎无能为力。而钬激光则不然，碎石过程中很少跑动，回冲率非常低，因而效率大为提高。它可以通过膀胱镜、输尿管镜及经皮镜直接碎石，不会造成组织损伤。而且钬激光光纤是可弯曲的，不仅可以通过硬性输尿管镜导入，还可以通过软性输尿管镜导入进行碎石。所以它对任何部位的输尿管、均可进行有效。采用钬激光膀胱更是易如反掌，只需通过膀胱镜的工作通道将钬激光光纤引入，然后发射激光，数秒钟后就被击碎并通过排出，既安全又省时。
